FRAUD ALERT: AI-POWERED SCAM
What to know about the latest threat.
We want to make you aware of a current scam in which fraudsters are using artificial intelligence (AI) to impersonate financial institutions through phone calls, text messages, and emails. These messages may appear convincing and may even “spoof” a legitimate phone number or email address.
Please remember:
• Memorial Federal Credit Union will never call, text, or email you asking for your account information, online banking credentials, one-time passcodes, or debit/credit card number.
• Memorial Federal Credit Union will never pressure you to transfer money, make a purchase, or share sensitive information — such as your SSN, account or member number(s).
• Memorial Federal Credit Union will never request that you go to a website and enter in your personal or account information or enter in your online banking credentials.
• Caller ID and email addresses can be manipulated to look legitimate.
• Regularly check your account transactions and statements for any unusual activity.
• Periodically check your online banking login activity for any login attempts made from unknown IP addresses or devices.
• Regularly update your online banking password.
How does the AI-powered Scam work?
1. Cardholders receive a spoofed call.
2. They are directed to a fraudulent website.
3. Credentials are captured and used immediately.
4. Fraudsters request and intercept any one-time passcodes.
5. Criminals log in, change contact information and seize full control of the account within minutes.
What to do if you’ve fallen victim to a fraud or scam:
